About the Author
Although active throughout her long life, painter and illustrator Eleanor Vere Boyle (1825-1916) kept a low profile, as was the custom for aristocratic women of her era. Admirers of her work included Dante Gabriel Rosetti, and Boyle's moody, dramatic style has a decidedly pre-Raphaelite air. In addition to her masterpiece, Beauty and the Beast, she illustrated the poetry of Tennyson and the fairy tales of Hans Christian Andersen.
