Suddenly a light appeared around the little girl child and she stopped crying. She was lifted off the ground and carried to Chaucer's stall and laid at his feet. Chaucer moved away not understanding what was happening.
The light moved away from the girl child and turned into a young woman.
She smiled at Chaucer and said, "You have been chosen to take care of the child. Her name is Callie. She is a special child that will grow and become a great woman."
Chaucer backed away further and said, "How can I care for this child? As you can see, I am a horse and she is human."
The woman smiled. "If you accept the responsibility to raise this child you will be given a gift of being human when there is a need."
The other horses were listening, and Megan said, "But she will need nourishment. How can we provide for her?"
The woman turned to Megan and said, "You have milk do you not?"
Megan backed away from the woman. "Yes, but my milk is not for humans."
"Indeed, it is. Your milk can sustain her. She will receive great nourishment from your milk."
Megan nodded and said, "Then she shall have it."
Chaucer moved towards the child on the ground and put his nose on her head. "She is so little."
"Yes," the woman said, "but not for long. Do you accept this task Chaucer?"
Chaucer nodded. "Yes."
The woman put her hand on Chaucer's head. "Then you are granted the gift of being human when there is a need."
She pulled a necklace from her gown and put it around Chaucer's neck. "This will give you the power to become human. As long as you wear it you will be able to be human and return to your natural form at will."
Chaucer looked at the child as she began to cry again and wished he were human so that he could help her.
