About the Author
Sir James Knowles (1831-1908) was an architect and editor who was born in London. He became friends with the poet Alfred, Lord Tennyson, whose own 'Idylls of the King' inspired Sir James to put this collection of stories together. Sir James later designed a house for Lord Tennyson as well as churches in Clapham in south London and the garden in Leicester Square. He co-founded the Metaphysical Society with Lord Tennyson in 1860, the members of which included many notable figures of Victorian society. He married twice and is buried in Brighton.
